As I was waiting for new tyres to be put on my car, I walked to a Goodwill I rarely go to (small, with mostly modern junk) and went to the aisle of knickknacks first rather than glass, for whatever reason (I usually hit up glass first), and quickly spotted this among the junk.

I picked it up and immediately saw "STERLING" faintly debossed on it. Upon closer inspection, I realised it said neither E.P. (Plated) nor "Weighted" (foil), and realised what it was. While not exactly a thick coating, it's a bit thicker than regular weighted sterling.

Due to the weight, I determined the glass is a leaded glass.

So, for $1 I got a sterling-silver-collared leaded-pattern-glass ashtray of unknown origin and age.

I found a British mark for B-I, but their mark is in an oval, whereas this one is free.

I'm just curious who made this and when?

This is not an ash tray but a glass wine coaster with a silver collar (usually plated). Often Italian but I guess this one is British, best guess date 1930s-50s. Lucky find. Hope this helps. Sandayart

I have the exact same thing. It belonged to my dad and he used it as an ashtray. He brought it home after WWII so it is vintage.

My mom had the exact one which we gave to a Goodwill in VA. Also a couple marble ashtrays which we also donated. Good to see things go to someone who appreciates them.

Is it small, like 4 inches or less? Because this one is a lot larger than the other ones I've found around so far. I no longer think it a wine coaster as suggested, unless it was for the whole bottle.
