Don't know the history except it's suppose to be a very old tobacco Cabot that I think at one time sat on a stand.

Beautiful! Indeed from Sweden, southern regions of Skåne or Småland. Too bad it's been stripped of its original paint. Used to be painted something like this: http://www.lauritz.com/sv/auktion/aenglaskaap-ingelstads-haerad-1840-tal/i1522633/
What's the story about tobacco? Intriguing, I've never heard that before. I also found this. Identical carving, must be the same builder! Gets you an idea of the original colors: http://www.ystad.se/globalassets/bildgalleri/kou---kulturfritid/klostret/anglaskap.jpg

They're called Angel Cabinets (Sw: Änglaskåp) From what I know, they just used to be hanging like that on a wall.

...and yet another one. They all seem to be from 1810-1860 and your particular design pops up around the Ystad region, South East Sweden. I think they used to have more than tobacco in them, often a bottle of snaps, i.e. spiced vodka. http://hemochantik.se/allmoge-frn-a-till-/
