This guy is pretty heavy at 5 1/2 pounds. It appears to me that there were a few separate processes to making this. If you see the bottom, it actually looks hollow, but it's not. It's solid glass, and looks like there are at least two more layers of glass as well.

I'm curious to know the answer to this. It appears to be encased on the outside too. Of course, I can see that the wings, eyes, beak etc...have all been applied, so I would love to hear about it and see if this truly is an old piece or new? Is this an old technique?

There's no signature and the pontil has been very well polished flat with not a rough edge anywhere. I purchased this in an antique shop and I know that does not always mean everything in there is old so I'm wondering. There's not even a scratch on the bottom!

    Curious as can be...

This looks like Rikaro Glass to me.
They are a Czech company although now I think all of their goods are made in China. It's always good stuff, like this.
The technique is not uncommon for larger objects. The basic shape is clear glass that has been coated in white. The black spatters and red comb and eyes are then added. Wings are clear glass. The base has been beautifully ground after cooling, and allows us to see the method of making.
I have some Rikaro here - such nice glass!

Karen...thanks so much, I carried this piece around the shop for about an hour just hoping I wouldn't break it or anything else there. Rikaro huh?! Good. I have a feeling I'm going to have to start paying more attention. Wish you could come here and we could hit the shops together! That would be awesome. I want to step up my game!!! Great info, very much appreciated!

This is a contemporary Chinese piece Susie. The white circle you see on the bottom is a classic feature you find on Chinese Murano's. I'm not a hundred percent sure, but what I think they do is while the bottom is still open, they decorate it internally and then seal it with a glass. Regardless, he's a cute little bugger :-)

Thank you Rick. I'm curious...Murano is now also made in China? Really? OMG. I honestly didn't know that or I just forgot. I actually did find this under Rikaro and although found, I'm not quite sure which one. Wow...I just re-read what Karen stated. Are all of us giving our work to China? Why are we all doing that? I know it's "cheaper" but come on, right?
    10. Rick55 Rick55, 7 years ago
No, no, no Sue. I'm assuming everybody knows, but the Chinese have flooded our market with Murano knockoffs - among other collectible glass. You'll find that they list them as Murano but they're not. A true Murano piece is made on the island of Murano, Italy. Venezuela also produces "Murano glass", but again, these are not true Murano's. Another deceptive practice of the Chinese is the use of fake labels. Here's a post I made a couple of years ago: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/152009-murano-labels
    11. shareurpassion shareurpassion, 7 years ago
Oh ok, so glad you said that...I was about to wonder how soon they will...well, whew!

You are so right tho. I have been fooled, but I'm not that knowledgeable with glass and that's where they get you. I don't know if you saw the penguin I posted but while researching it I found one and they listed it as a Murano saying it was "rare" I suppose the four letters to beware of, right? Rare must really mean, they don't know so they are guessing... I think that's about what it comes down to.

      Thanks Rick!
    12. Rick55 Rick55, 7 years ago
Yes Sue, I saw the penguin and commented. It seems like everything is "rare" on ebay. If you ask them, they tell you they couldn't find another, so that makes it rare. I've even find these "rare" items on auction house listings.

Hey Val, thanks for poppin in! you rockin it tonite?

    14. shareurpassion shareurpassion, 7 years ago
Rick, because of the internet we all know there are very few, if any rare anything anymore. Which was pretty surprising when things all got started with the web. All of a sudden you look and there are a million things of the same thing you have and you thought you were the only one!!! haha. not so much! ;)

      ==Then it gets more confusing....LOL.

here I had posted back a while ago, a bowl with this outer cloud like image on the bottom. Base was polished cut, lots of wear, and also HAD A Fratelli Toso Label on it. I was confusing with a base like that......I questioned Anita ( Murano Dealer in USA ) on this and she confirmed my piece was Murano, and FT work.

      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/140733-murano-bowl--label--murano-fratelli

Then also in Leslie Pina's book on FT, page 165, she describes them as having a 'cloud like pattern' which seems appropriate..."" about another bowl something like mine.

So now....Is your Murano with at outer Cloud like Base? No, I believe it is China as there is not wear on it, the Quality is not there on the rest of it, but the Eyes do look pretty good.

Believe me -- Learning about Murano Glass can cause GREY HAIR....LOL....after a while you get to see more of the Quality in the piece and just reviewing lots of info....and I still do not know all of it. Too much to learn in my life time about glass....LOL

I will hunt through my old pics here and do up a post from my early days of Murano glass which I could not understand was not Murano..........It was all a learning process, that is the Collecting process.

lol......You usually go Grey first !!!!

As Karen stated, this is possibly made by Rikaro, (but without an exact match, there's no way to say for sure) which are Chinese Murano knockoffs. Actually, for a Chinese piece, it's very well made (notice the quality of the birds' combe and wattle as opposed to other Chinese roosters) which leads me to believe it could possibly be distributed by Badash, who sell a higher quality Chinese Murano-style product.

The cloud-like pattern referenced in the Fratelli Toso book Rosie, is the decoration on the bowl and has nothing to do with the white circle on the base. https://postimg.org/image/lxibh9bkl/ I think you're just misinterpreting the book, which by the way, has your exact bowl, which as you can see, has brown instead of green "leaves" (?).

Although I like the Poggi rooster Rosie, it's nothing but a rooster and nothing like Sue's example... It's like comparing a Loetz vase with one by Rindskopf of a similar decor... they both look similar but one cannot be used to identify the other. There are only so many ways to make a glass rooster, so most will look basically the same. Again, without an exact match, who's to say?
    18. antiquerose antiquerose, 7 years ago
Yes most likely Chinese rooster as I said above .... [" No, I believe it is China as there is not wear on it, the Quality is not there on the rest of it, but the Eyes do look pretty good." ]

I posted the other Rooster just to show as a FYI, and the cloud thing I went back and looked at the quote ...You are correct Rick, and I am wrong on that interpretation. I will go bury my head in the Sand now...

Karen, and all others as well, I apologize and should have marked this as "Solved" as soon as I read Karen's comment. I must have forgotten that I had marked it as unsolved in the first place.

Rose, thank you so much for all your info. Yes, it's a Rikaroo as Karen said, I did find it right away after reading her comment. She had also stated that they are made in China. So, apologies for not marking it correctly! I wonder, were there a lot of Murano made like this??? Seems a bit strange. This piece is very heavy but as I looked at it, something about it told me not Murano, besides the bottom, or so I thought. Thank you none the less Rose!
