I've never seen a Chinese / Japanese iron planter before. it looks like it should be for bonsai, but the hole is way too small for one. where do you think it's from and for what? Ikebana, maybe? the piece is 11.5 inches long by just under 3 inches tall.
it's got a very nice form and design though.

It certainly looks Asian, but is there any chance that that is Arab writing on the sides?
i don't know. it is certainly a Chinese design overall, but i can't tell what that cartouche is [or whatever it is called]. ??
