This vase is interesting in a number of ways, despite looking similar to others I own.
The first thing that struck me was the colour of the glass ground, a beautiful, soft lilac, unlike any glass I have seen before. The large white glass spatters seem to float over the lilac, and by the shadows created I think the spatters are on a separate layer of clear glass. The gold foil on one side seems unnecessary to me, but the artist was not wrong to include it.
The white foot grounds the vase, the white lip completes the neck, and the handles are the perfect size and shape for the whole.
The most interesting thing however is that the vase has a large number of unintentional bubbles in the glass; they are random in size and placement and only appear in the clear and lilac sections. As a whole, the work shows a lot of glass blowing skill and technique, but the bubbles are a major flaw. I have never, I mean NEVER, seen so many bubbles in a glass piece from Japan before. I can't see that they were ever a deliberate act.
I'm not moaning here, just interested. When I unboxed this vase everyone in my house commented on it's beauty. It is calmly and gorgeously sitting here with me now.
I have no idea who made this. The style is very much in the realm of Hisatoshi Iwata; the work is not his.

Well it's beautiful, flaws and all, if that's what they are. I was struck by the lilac color, it's ethereal combined with the white "spatter" in the shadows there is an atmospheric quality, almost vanishing, to the work. All elements combined well, form, handles, gold flakes, white foot and rim. It's a beauty for sure. :)
It's such a beautiful vase. Interesting about the bubbles indeed. It's very poetic, in a way, because you will never know. All the more special!

A lovely piece of glass in its entirety.....and once again like nothing from Europe or North America. And you're totally right about the clear glass layer under the spatter ......that is familiar.
And a handsome vase it is Karen! I love how the spatter seems to float like so many clouds in the sky... I'm not too sure about the gold foil, but it definitely doesn't detract from the overall beauty of the piece.

Many thanks Rick for your observations. As you have seen with many of my other pieces from Japan, they love them some gold (or silver) foil. I think it affects the purity of the work a bit here, but easily fixed by turning it around lol.
Oh no I like the gold fleck diamond, it's the perfect finishing. If you think of this vase as a lake in the evening when waters are often cast lavender, then the gold is the flecking of the sun on the surface. Perfect to the appreciative eye as yours always is, Karen. :)
