This plate was a find at Surry Hills market almost twenty years ago. I like mixed metal work and this plate was made in Hiroshima. In 1902 it seems that Takuro Ito revived an art form dating back to the Edo period. He worked at the Ito Kyuho-do studios and it continues to this day.
I think the fish are carp or 'koi'. One is silver and the other gold with shibuichi eyes. I believe the Japanese associate 'koi' with perseverance, courage, the family and good luck. The character for 'koi' also is the character for 'love'. Two koi swimming together against the forces of the stream. Nice. I especially like the nicely turned and bound edges of the plate.
Can anyone help me with the signature?

kevin -- could you check out the member maggadora -- posting strange antique vase -- i thought someone posted a similar glass piece last week -- but can't find it -- think it was either a ruckle or a kralik --
Hi! Can't find maggadora. Can you post the link?
Hi, found it! From Iceland is maggadora? Glass is from Murano. Very good piece. I was put off by the "how much is it worth"? It looks like a 'losanghe', 'murrhine' or 'pezzato'. That is quite different from the Ruckl. It is more constructed. The Ruckl pieces are more haphazard, I think. The coral red colour is very nice.
thanks kevin -- i knew you would come threw -- i thought the ruckls looked more refined and this piece more rugged and coarse -- will visit some of the sites you just mentioned in your comments -- have a great eve kev -- your terrific
if you come across another koi like this or know where i could find one -- keep me in mind -- thanks
