This is a WW II German sextant as used by the crews of surface ships and u boats as well. A sextants primary use is to determine the angle between a celestial object and the horizon. The angle and the time that it was measured, can be used to calculate a position line on a nautical chart. The case is oak veneered, and is original to the sextant.
