    I'm thinking these have something to do with weaving or sewing. Some sort of spindles and maybe the maracas-like items are for darning socks?? Someone educate me...

      As for the maracas, yes, they are sock darners and I......still use mine. The other things look like really big thread holders/bobbins for really big sewing machines.

      The spindles *do* look very much like thread spools found on old industrial looms/fabric machinery, albeit ones with little (or no) thread left on them. When full, I believe that sort of spool would be wound tightly into a sorta conical shape, probably several inches across.
