While I don't think it's from the 'square nail' era, the thin, half-dollar-sized disk is pressed into the wood-wrapped tube by a square-headed nail or peg. The end of the tube is open.
What is its use and age?
I found it in a box of junk at a thrift store and picked it up out of curiosity.

Looks like a paint scraper to me.
Looks like a turn of the century electric therapy part used on the temples. Odd find.
Onedtent, I cannot see how it would be used to scrape paint.
Phonoboy, when I first saw it, I had thought electrical. But it was difficult for me to formulate an idea as to what it would be used for. LOL.

ABOLUTELY interesting enough SpiritBear?! <applause> Can you tell what kinda metal it is made out of? It looks kinda rusty (indicating steel) which might fit the 'paint scraper' theory, but if its corroded brass (plated?) instead it could fit the much more-funner 'electrical therapy thing' theory... ;-)
It's heavy but not magnetic. I gouged the underside, but it remained a white metal. I'm guessing zinc or magnesium.
I've never seen a round scraped, Anything Obscure.
