I found this item in a grab bag with sewing/craft supplies. I am mystified by the closed pointed end, and the space near the pointed end that opens up when the corner is pressed. There is a spring inside that keeps the item closed up.

I believe that is a shuttle to hold the wound thread which was loaded in an antique, or very old sewing machine. I don't think they are too hard to find BUT it is quite larger than any I have used--maybe for use on an old Industrial machine ?? I am sure someone can give you more details.
