1860s carte de visite out of Ashland, Ohio.

Image has ink ID on the back of Edsel Chamberlain.

I am not sure what the device is on the table. Any feedback or information is appreciated.

It has what looks like a basic generator or elec. motor parts but that doesn't explain what looks like a sparkplug & what appears to be a pointer in the middle. "Me not know, Mon."

My first thoughts were along blunderbuss2' motor/generator ideas, but if it is an 'electrical' machine, it sorta seems to be lacking any 'electric wires' or 'terminals' or stuff...making me now wonder more if it might be some sort of 'engine'? (or prototype/model thereof?). The large pulley and driveshaft setup present an interesting connundrum -- were they intended to drive the machine from another motive force, or to produce the motive force to drive something else...??

Hi Scott, great photo. That 'spindle' on the left side looks very similar to the Singer sewing machine to me but looking at the other side...hmmm? Couldn't be a printing press. Beats me.
