Hello, I have this beautiful doll that needs a little TLC with the hair and clean up but was given to me by my aunt. She was given to my aunt by a 90+ year old lady and this was her doll when she was a child. She is beautiful with brown open/shut eyes and amazing detail painted on her face. She's got dimples, and an open mouth with two top teeth. She is a bisque doll. She is missing most of her hair but is actually in good condition just needs cleaning up. She is marked on the back of her head "199 70" Does anyone know who made her or what year she was made? I have asked several doll collectors/appraisers and they haven't been able to tell me anything. I believe she looks like a Barrois Eugene doll but am not 100% sure. Can anyone help!? Thanks!

I'm just not finding that mold number with a Eugene doll. It's German I'm thinking, and a character doll. 7/0 is her head size. I have found that Kestner has that mold number (199) and Gebrüder Knoch. Also I have found that mold number for Schutzmeister & Quendt dolls. I have not nailed her down as of yet though, the 7/0 seems to be the stopper here

Things to look for..how tall is she? Is she all bisque or cloth and bisque, or composition body? That size head I'm thinking what..11-12"?

She is 10" long and her body appears to be paper mache' or something. her head is bisque and swivels.

I do think this is a kestner Doll as I found a description of a kestner doll that had a wooden body which I believe might be what she is. I just still haven't found a picture of this kestner doll to confirm.

I can't see the body now. From what I could see she looked like composition. Without a picture of the body I can't say.

Okay that first picture came up. She looks like composition to me

Also I can't tell if she is a socket head or has a shoulder plate. Usually when a doll has a wood body, it's all wood including the body.

      Here is a swivel head

      I found a Kley Hahn doll with a 199

There is no doubt it's a good quality doll I just can't find one like yours. You might try the EBay doll boards.

Yes she has a socket head that swivels. The head is bisque though. Her body appears to be wooden or paper mache' and her arms and legs are bent and held on with string.

I know that one listing said "paper mache'" but is actually called composition. I would try the eBay doll boards. You can find the doll boards under "community"

Alot of people said they found that kestner, goebel, handwerck , unidentified used this mold number but couldn't find anything else so she may just remain a mystery. Her clothes did turn out lovely though after washing. They are still in very good condition. I would like to rewig her as she is sort of a mess with the hair LOL I don't want to do that without finding out if this will hurt her value of course.

Another thing that is different about her is her face paint. Look at the eyebrows. They are a single stroke instead of feathered as most kestner dolls.
At the doll chat on ebay one person did say that it is possible that kestner or another doll maker could've made the doll heads for another doll maker and that is why she is not easy to trace back to a doll maker. her face shape does remind me of a little boy kestner doll but I did see an Armand Marseille doll that looked alot like her but the face painting wasn't the same.

Do not remove or do anything with the wig or you will lose the valued.
    14. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 12 years ago
I hate to dispute you mac, but when selling a bisque on line it's expected to remove the wig and pate and but a blue light inside the doll to check for cracks. Collectors have no problem replacing wigs
    15. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 12 years ago
Replacing the wig is a good thing as long as you find the right wig. Find a place that sells wigs appropriate for bisque dolls or on ebay that has an old one for sale. Do not use synthetic new on bisque dolls.
