I was offered a trade option for a Korean " Thousand Cranes" vase I had in my booth at the antique shop the other day. My friend and fellow vendor collects Celadon porcelain and had lived in Korea for a time. She had this beautiful painting in her booth which I've had my eye on for quite some time. I did research it for her a while ago and admittedly found nothing more than the letter tucked in the back had mentioned. There are listed artists for Carl and Clara and the alternate surname spellings of Fischer but no bio's. It appears to be quite old but it's only signed C.F. 91 in the bottom left hand corner. Without the letter I'd have a real mystery. The canvas is tacked to the stretcher and very darkened with age. So I'm fairly sure it was painted in 1891. It's a beautiful serene Autumn scene of a stream with a cottage in the distance. Muted colors and very well executed with a touch of Impressionism but still leaning a bit more towards realism. The frame looks like it was given a hasty splash of new gold paint but it is quite heavy with a wonderfully ornate border. So I think we are both more than happy with our new treasures. -Mike-

It's a very refined piece Mike, and well set off by the frame.
I wonder if you would be able to use that address to find out more? Old census maybe?

I think so too Karen. I had pulled up the Sandusky historical societies page but it wasn't loading the pages I wanted to look at. Some sites are just glitchy. Just haven't gotten back to it. The census is a great idea. Sandusky is a 30 min. drive from where I live. The main attraction there is the Cedar Point Amusement Park. Very crowded in the Summer through October. If I can get an address from the census I might drive out there and see if I can find 48th Street. :)

      Mike,
This is really an outstanding painting. And the letter, that came with it, makes it even better. Sounds like you definitely did the right thing by making the trade.

looks more like a painting by Charles Foster - younger brother of the more well-known Ben Foster.

Thanks Ho2 for another option as to who the artist may be. I 'll have to try and research it from that prospective. It wouldn't be the first time that family stories about heirlooms passed down from generation to generation have been wrong. :)
