Picked up this large Cast Iron Crucifix at an outdoor town-wide Garage sale last Saturday and was wondering if anyone could recognize the lettering on the back. I tried many methods ie., tracing, powdering, close-up photography etc. but to no avail. The seller had no idea where it came from except that it was in the attic when they bought their house . Since it was a French Canadian household, it was probably brought over from France to Quebec in the 18th-19th century. It is extremely heavy 12 1/2 lbs, made completely of Cast Iron, stands 20 3/4" tall, has a panelled octagonal base and the cross itself is made like tree branches...knots and all. It has a large uneven flat screw holding the base to the stem and the other smaller parts are all man-made. It had gilding all-over at one time. The banner INRI above Christ is quite ornate. Each foot is nailed separately indicating an older manufacture. The four words on the back are well worn because it is exactly there where people would have handled the crucifix to move it around. There is also a loop near where the cross arm meets so that it could have been hung. Has anyone ever come across such a Crucifix or know what the writing could be?
