40 years ago, as I was ready to leave PR, a friend gave me a little duck (Eend), which I have kept to this day. Later, a friend here in NY got me a larger version (Eendje) at the flea market. I added two small ones --one of which I gave to a friend. I found a second large duck, this time with a Leerdam label. The hunt was on.
Then there was the matter of owls. By now I could recognize Leerdam's distinctive frosted glass. Both my partner and I collect owls, and my advice has always been to avoid the cheap stuff. But when I saw this first owl, I knew what it was and bought it. Now I had to document everything!
I went on E-Bay, and lo and behold, a similar owl had just gone for a considerable amount. I wrote the dealer asking for ID help and he DIRECTED me to the Leerdam exhibition catalog, which was currently on sale. I got it (more expensive that my three owls put together, since I had found them at the local FM)
And thus I found out the ducks and the elephant (Oliphant)which I added later had been designed by Lucienne Bloch, Ernst Bloch's youngest daughter(check Wikipedia: a fascinating story) The owls (Uil), by Hein Hauptman, and the 14" Madonna, my latest find, by S. A. . Uiterwaal.
I do not like clear glass except in wine stems. But I love animal figurines!
I forgot to add: they had paper labels which most have lost. I think I can recognize them anywhere, having memorized the book!

I love Stef Uiterwaal's madonna, i used to have one until in my early days of collecting i had to sell her, one of the biggest regrets of my life.

They are great, the owl's have a great value here in NL. They are sold for euro 300 -400 at the moment. The Madonna is also great but you need to find a base with light in them, there is a light for the big Madonna and another one for the small one. I collect Leerdam glass since 20 years now and bought a lot of nice items from people living in the USA. This is also a nice site when you like Leerdam glass : http://www.leerdamunica.nl/. BTW there's a dachshund for sale here in Holland in purple (nearly black) glass. That's not an article that was meant for sale. Some workers had purple glass left over after 5 o'clock and made something for themselves I guess.
