    An English Georgian pair of cut glass navette salts, each with stepped diamond shaped foot. These were a market find nearly twenty five years ago. They have always appealed for the beautiful cutting and their elegant shape. What is not elegant is the "lemon-squeezer" foot. It's well moulded and both of these have some damage to the edges of the feet. They were well used over the last two hundred odd years!

      I've always lved the boat shape of these salts. I've always thought they might be Irish, but still not sure. The shape is related to silver George III 'helmet' shapes too, I think.

      I have a few salt boats and I have been glass hunting in Ireland and I suspect these are English. The defining thing is that they seem too well made, compared to the ones I have seen in Ireland. There is too much cutting on the bowls, the Irish ones I saw had more uncut glass on the bowls. When I get them photographed and loaded you will see what I mean. I may be wrong, but I think these lemon squeeze footed salt boats were made before Ireland got into it's stride with glass cutting. Of course I could be completely wrong. They are lovely things, I have never seen a pair. I think they are totally undervalued in comparison to drinking glasses.
