Can anyone help? I have recently acquired this wooden carving at a sale. I would like to date it and also would like to know whether it is a toy or has a religious background. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone might have. Thank you.

I would say it was made to sit on a wagon or horse cart. Upper arms would have bent to hold stirrups. Usually with the carved people the clothes are carved too. I would say what you are looking for is a carved figure that had his clothes stapled on, or something similar to staples.
