This device was used by doctors to test hearing. Originally invented by Francis Galton in the 1870s. It was used to determine the limits of human hearing compared to other species and was later adopted by eugenecists as another of many measurements of presumed inferiority. This one was manufactured by Adams in the 20s or 30s. It is unusual to find one with the original rubber bulb intact.
