Early single strand barbed wire was made from inferior steel and had a tendency to stretch and sag. Inline tighteners were used to keep the fences tight. Fence stays were used between the posts to re-inforce the fence. Our ancestors had style. Even the clips that hold the stays in place were patented items. With the rust and wire clip the second photo looks like a lion head.
