Exceedingly rare silver & bronze "beetle" sack vase by Gustav Gurschner and cast forged by Arthur Krupp K.K. Kunst-Erzgiesserei, Wein in the early 1900s. Dark green molded patinated bronze with fabric texture on lower portion of the vase, while the upper section features a succession of Celtic motifs in sterling/800 german silver. The beetle motif on the front with its feeler forms a framing pointed oval form. Foundry stamped “1604 (possible overstamp)” and “Gurschner Austria” on the lower reverse. 7.25” (H) x 6.5” (W).
Gustav Gurschner studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1888 to 1894 and in Munich in 1896, before moving to Paris in 1897 and apprenticing under the Art Nouveau artists Alexandre Charpentier, Jean-Auguste Dampt and Ville Vallgren. Gurschner showed his works in numerous exhibitions; he took part regularly in the Salon du Champ de Mars in Paris and after its foundation in 1897, in the exhibitions by the Vienna Secession.

Beautiful, intricate work. The decor is amazing. Reminds me of Saxon metal work. An important piece of metalwork from a very important Art Nouveau designer. Thank you for sharing this immaculate piece.

Thanks for the kind words, AH. I've seen you and your partner's Loetz pieces...I think you are being overly modest. Plus, I love how you shoot your items for display.
Thanks cogito :$ Well, the Lotz items are simply his. But the pictures are mine, haha :)
