Had 1 in our family for years late 50's early 60's ? I don't think consumer safety would allow this these days (not safe) but we survived unscathed. Is this original finish it looks refinished.
Don't know alot about these but looks like the one I used as a kid. Mine was pine and a lighter varnish. Yours does look refinished and not very well done. But of course these were constantly being washed down and probably looked bad. Could have also had a decal on the back. No these would not be allowed these days because mothers back then stayed inthe kitchen the whole time baby slopped down thier food. So put on your bib and just enjoy this.
I saw one today at a yard sale and was thinking about getting it for someones baby shower. I wonder if its worth anything? It just caught my eye!
