This basket was made by Mavis Doering, of the Cherokee Nation. She was born in 1929 and was mostly self taught in basket making. She used Honeysuckle, Buckrush, oak and ash splints and cat tail leaves in her baskets. Her baskets have been in museums all over. This basket is double walled and made of Buck Rush with natural dyes of red and yellow. Mavis Doering was very well known for her baskets and although she did put dates along with her signatures on the bottom, this one does not have a date. It does, however, have a 60 written on the side of the basket. I do not know if that means .60 cents, or 60 dollars. I am very proud to be able to have this in my collection, Mavis Doering was a master basket maker.
