This is a Tsimshian basket, about 5 inches in diameter. The Coast Tsimshian people live in Northern British Columbia and Southeastern Alaska. Their baskets are usually made of twined red cedar bark with bear grass false embroidery. The basket has the word "Alaska" embroidered around the middle along with three little designs in the middle of the word. It is a great example of the basketry, although I have seen much more wonderful designs like butterflies.
