We have my mother's Schwinn New Departure Model D bike. The serial number on the bottom is E34600 which puts it as being made in Sept 1948. It's all original with the original Goodyear 26 x 2.125 tires. It's a little scratched up and the seat has a small tear in it but it rides like it was built yesterday. We were wondering if it's worth anything. I haven't been able to find a similar bike online to compare it to.

1953
not 1948
The serial number was found on the bottom of the frame under the pedal crank housing and is clearly made in 1948, around Sept 10 according to the list that I've found in several places.
Nice bike! Even nicer that it was your mom's... Unfortunately, girl's bikes aren't as valuable as their male counterparts. That said, it's probably worth around $200- $300
