I really need to get a hold of a black light.... I sent you an e-mail the other day
That is beautiful, I want a black light now...just to see a few things I have....not as much as you have....wow...
Thanks wingletts !! Pics don't do uranium glass justice.A blacklight is a great investment.And thanks scandinavian_pieces !!
Your glassware is Beautiful.. With the black light it looks like Vaseline glass too... I don't see much uranium glass. Your collection is Great!!!!
Thanks for the love lovevintage !! Vaseline glass is uranium glass.I mainly collect uranium glass lamps.Along with a few other pieces of uranium glass. And I'm sure you see it you just can't tell without a blacklight a lot of the time.
Thanks again ThriftStoreAddict !!
I'm probably being absolutely stupid but is Uranium glass at all dangerous? I sometimes see Uranium glass perfume bottles for sale but have never bought one because I worry they might be radio-active. I love your collection of light reflective minerals and I'm sure you wouldn't have dangerous objects in your home so I clearly am being stupid! What sort of light is needed to view them? And can you tell me what the difference is between Uranium glass and Vaseline glass?
Not a stupid question at all. After I got my first piece I searched the dangers of uranium glass. As always I searched several sites to find the most common answer. Most said a large collection was equal to watching TV or sitting in front of your puter.I did find one site that warned against eating or drinking from uranium glass. One site out of many.
As far as the vaseline title...purest will tell you only yellow uranium glass is vaseline.Actually the term canary glass for yellow came about LONG before the term vaseline glass. So if purist be pure they should be calling yellow uranium glass canary glass.(JMHO)Canary glass circa late 1800s vaseline glass circa 1950s.
Any poster blacklight will excite the uranium atoms to make them glow.
The minerals I've listed are not uranium. They are several different species of fluorescent minerals. Some of these fluoresce under long wave(poster) blacklight but most fluoresce under shortwave(a much harder to find and way more expensive) blacklight.
I'm sorry Thanks for the love and question daisymay !!
Thank you Hedgewalker, that was both reassuring and informative. I'll be braver in future!
Anytime daisymay.Once you start collecting uranium glass you'll be hooked !
Thanks kerry and vanskyock !!
Wowwie!! Look at that glow! I have to take more pics of my stuff - I have an almost identical necklace that I hang off of one of my pieces!
I'd love to see your collection Deco !
