Gondola centerpeice bowl, also referred to as a fruit bowl. Fruit bowl? Maybe bananas would fit? The company was Jeannette Glass located in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. The flaking is due to a process called cold painting. In my opinion cold painting has ruined many beautiful peices of glass. I think Jeannette Glass was the worst "offender" when it comes to cold painting. I just don't understand why such a process was used in a time when I think American craftsmanship was more prevailent. Obviously cleaning will only make it worse. I think I have made the point clear that I don't like cold painted glass, so I will get off that subject. You can research Jeannette Glass easily online as it is very common. You may be familiar with one of their patterns, "Iris and Herringbone", even if you don't know it by name, unfortunately some colors in this pattern were also cold painted.
