One of my favorite gate models. Can't be sure it is a patent model due to it's size 12"x29"x6" which exceeds the Patent Office requirements of 12"x12"x12". Could the requirement have been interpreted as total cubic inches? There is a burn on the left side. Could it have survived one of the fires that occurred in the Patent Office building? Patented by Edwin J. Hart of Butler, PA December 14, 1880. Patent models were required from 1836 to about 1890. The gate tilts to clear obstructions in its path and has holes in the cam rail that allowed it to be pinned at a given height.
