This is an early piece of shell art that dates from the Phillipine Insurrection.
The shell has engraved, intertwined initials at the top and commemorates the "Battle of Oato Forts, Oct 24, 1904".
The lamp was rewired in the last 20 years and the shell may have been initially engraved as a vase.
The battle of Oato was fought by elements of the 2-22nd Infantry, F/ 14th Cavalry, a battalion of 23rd Infantry, and the 17th Battery Field Artillery.
The Moros guerillas got the worst of the fight with 15 KIAs. The 22nd IN suffered 2 WIAs.

This shell is engraved to show use in 1904. It is one of the earliest pieces of dated shell art (sub category of trench art) that I have seen.
