New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railway (NICKEL PLATE) brass top, bellbottom railroad lantern made by the Adams & Westlake Co., of Chicago, IL, in the early 1880's. This single-guard, no. 39 model, is boldly embossed on the lid reflector N.Y.C. & St. L RY. The underside of the base is stamped with the A&W hallmark that includes several patent dates, the latest of which is 1882. The clear, extended base globe is boldly embossed N.Y.C. & S.L.RY.
