Early dolls so called were often in 1700's for adults and were rated XXX . The Queen Anne dolls are earliest I have held from late 1700's . They really were not cute at all but I do love them . Since I was once a little girl I can say I think it comes from a girls/woman's need to nurture that dolls were important to us we were like their Moms as girls grew they wanted dolls to experiment with fashion and hair and sew for so we still liked them and when we get old we love the history that each one carries . My son had a doll as a little boy I wanted him to know how to be a caring Dad someday . When tested in HS nearly all the boys did not know how to hold a baby, change a diaper ect. They need these skills to be good dads .
I also appreciate now that antique dolls were toys and no one collected yrs back before around the 60's so many were just tossed out so always glad to find one someone cared enough to keep to pass on . Dolls have evolved as children have changed so have dolls. In My era every girl wanted a baby doll and then a Bride doll . We were programmed to be Moms . Now the world is open for women to be anything and Dolls are now Dr's ect showing career paths for women . Ok I will end my long story :-)
Manikin, I enjoyed reading your narrative about dolls and their place in society.
