I found this case at an antique store for about $300 which I thought was a great deal. You just can't find these anymore. I'm waiting to find an old larger glass and oak floor case to set this on top of. As you can see, I already have some odd curious stuff in it. Is that an old Coca Cola bottle opener in there? Even the back door has the original hinges, springs and handle. The mirror in the back still has life in it! I did add some black felt cause the inside was old worn slat wood. The lady that owned this said it was in her grandfather's store for as long as she could remember, she told me he opened his store in Tenn. round 1907. 100 years works for me.

What kind of guitar is that I see back in the corner? Martin or Gibson? I play acoustic myself, so if you and Faith need another backup guy, I'm your man. Just kidding, I totally suck, endless desire, but limited talent! By the way how did the Christmas recording go?
Hey early, I think it went ok. I will know more in the near future. Airs on the 1st of December on ABC. Not sure what time but check your local listings. The guitar in the background is actually 2 Gibsons. The one facing in the shot is an L-1 that I use for slide playing from time to time, the other is an older Jazz model I hardly play and probably needs a good refretting. It is one of the earlier electrics. I don't get to play as much as I used to because singing has taken over in the last 15 years. It is fun to play though.
I have a Yamaha 12 string, Alvarez and an Ovation 6 string. Trying to finger pick old John Denver stuff now. Its not easy! Sort of like a puzzle trying to work it all out! Question - is Nashville a good place to get a decent deal on a used Martin. (or it may be the worst place because of demand!) I want a real sweet sound, but don't care if it is beat up you know what I mean. Nashville is only 3 hours south of me, so it might be worth the trip down there when I get ready to buy. Your thoughts?
I would say you're right a fine Martin here,,, it may cost you more than elsewhere. Martins are in huge demand here.
This may sound strange but I would start with Gruen Guitars just because George knows his stuff. I'm just not sure what they go for these days because I haven't kept up with it in some years. It could run you betweeen $2500 to $4500 maybe.
As far as playing styles, I know what you're talkin bout on the fingerpicking thing. I have had the pleasure of working with Clint Black on several occasions, he is a really gifted fingerpicker and we will always play thru a few James Taylor classics. People think fingerpicking is relatively easy to master but it ain't. Everyone has a little different approach on it. I would suggest you buying all the classic fingerpicking videos out there for sale. Now I'm sure they're all on DVD. Whether it's a live concert video or an instructional one, any one will teach you volumes about the style. I think John Denver's older PBS concert may be available now on dvd but not sure.

Good luck Blaine! My 2 main guitars right now are a Lowden cedar top, rosewood back and sides and a Gibson Advanced Jumbo Reissue, spruce top Indian Rosewood back and sides. The Lowden is for fingerpicking and the Gibson is for everything else.

A Gibson Jumbo. Gibsons are nice, especially the older ones. Everytime I think of a Gibson, I think of Mother Maybelle and the Carter Family. . . I grew up listening to Johnny Cash.. . . .
Yeah, I saw a great documentary on the Carter family a few months back on PBS.
They had a hard life but when they started making money, they were livin high on the hog for the depression. Course that lead to lots of other troubles. I wish I owned a pre-war AJ but those things are ridiculous in price. You know Chet Atkins got his start playing for the Carters.
Hey Perry, would love to see a few pics of your guitars someday! I'm like Blaine,been playing accoustic for years,never having the real time to dedicate to getting good,but I have a huge admiration for anyone who can! Also a huge fan of the "Man in Black". Blaine, good luck on your quest for a Martin,they are the sweetest sound in the right hands! When I master the Yammy, thats the first thing I'm going to get also!
