I am a 55 yo 100% disabled veteran P&T. Which I acquired as an USAF combat medic/ surgical assistant. Big guy in the Back of the auction who will go outa my way to help you but is very quite and removed, that’s me. Like being at a bar without alcohol, the feeling is the same. Go to the same auction and spend enough and you become in and you acquire a reputation. A love odd old things, the stranger the better; my hook is baited with a small box full of small old mixed things. The 1st item I bought at auction was an 1864 CU $500 CSA with a partial red treasury mark on back corner. That note 35 years ago was less than 50 dollars. I was hooked on the game. Bliss for me is an eclectic collection of letters, magazines, and small curios; a 100 year old box unchecked & untouched box of paper. Most of the stuff I like is paper, or buying out of place things that the house usually does not sale and people are unfamiliar with or is part of a larger “modified” group. Or an auction selling an estate where something in that particular sell is just outa place. Eclectic collecting is my favorite pastime. I am repetitious, huh? Buying at auction has taught me to sit or stand in the back of the house, although standing is harder now that pain is an issue. Best part of an auction is it is akin to playing Jeopardy with real money, and it becomes a “what do you really know about the minutia of history”. Having paid a huge sum learning what the bottom dwellers are selling as real or just misrepresenting as real or a “new” type/find, had been at the beginning very grueling. It required a love of learning, otherwise you would not spend that much time. Stuffed antique animals or a human leg bone(“could be an apes leg, but doesn’t look strong enough”) that the gist. SE Asia is the capital of copied good and they are the best at it. North Korea produces US money that is hard to tell from the real thing. You start looking for “error” notes and the next thing you find the same error on any note of that series deliberately done by the US Mint. It is a simple, but very effective tool. I have even picked up a counterfeit gold coin once, gotta love it. Loved sports until my injuries caught up with me. Went up to 425lbs without working out now at 195lbs. Racquetball, swimming, triathlons, biking. Mt climbing. Best was surfing in hurricanes or ocean Kayaking off Jersey shore. I loved it on a winter night; sitting underneath the bridge in the dark watching the NY bridge & tunnel crowd go pass me on there shore hugging trains, which were lite up allowing me to see in and yet remain invisible, like a ghost. The paddle hitting the water at night would sometime explode like different colored flashbulbs going off at the tip of the paddle. I finally figured out I was in the mist of a large group of jellyfish or squid and a touch set them off. Paddling the Sandy hook area at night on changing tides during a storm to paddle into NY Harbor with Wall Street. You would probably go to jail now. I swam 5-7 day a week year around swimming 5,000-10,000 yards. Now I can only dive and that’s increditable hard. Looking for Gold in Virginia Waters, deeper the better. Recently caught a full grown beaver by the tail, boy was he heavy and fat. Willow branches make good friends. Just need to move and get a Siamese cat. Great learning site here!
