This is a lesson in the unpredictability of baseball. Alex Gordon was a can't miss prospect coming out of the University of Nebraska and in the Royals minor league system. He is the only player ever to be named College Player of the Year and Minor League Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons.
The trouble is, Gordon hasn't amounted to much in the big leagues. In fact, this season he was sent down to Triple-A and converted from third base to left field. I got this autograph when he was a hot shot prospect, much in the way Dave Bloomer gets his autographs (see the Collectors Weekly interview here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/how-to-build-a-killer-baseball-memorabilia-collection-scouting-the-minors-with-dave-bloomer/

Cool story with a happy ending: he's back in the outfield with the Royals again. I like your parallel to the Bloomer interview, which is a great read.
