Hello: I bought this piece in Ashville, NC about 15 years ago at an estate auction. I didn't have any idea what it was then, and still don't! It is wooden and looks to be made out of one piece of wood. It appears to be painted with some kind of red paint. I hope someone in your organization will be able to identify it and give an approximate age. It is 38" tall and 9-1/4" wide. If you need more pictures or information, please let me know. Thank you so much for your time.

I know nothing about this, but I have to comment because it is so cool.
The bald square spot suggests a piece missing? Also, notice the wearing on the outside tips and the flat bottom, and the design looks like it should be standing up that way. Maybe it's just a decoration? I love it ;)
First thing I thought of was something to do with weaving. Stand on the bottom piece and wrap your yarn, etc through the sections on top. A total shot in the dark on my part.
Could it be the back of a chair ? The carving looks African or maybe from India.
Did you figure out what it is? I just came across the same thing. The painting is very Pennsylvania Dutch on mine. The lower/paddle part is attached via a peg and wooden dowel but otherwise looks very similar to your picture.
Did you ever find out what this is? I showed my piece to a couple of antique dealers and no one had any idea. The best guesses were something to do with spinning, or a fireplace screen.
We have almost the same item in green and an Scandinavian floral decor. Did you ever find out what this is?
