Ponytail Barbie # 3 can be easy to identify by hair and vinyl coloring . These dolls lost there color and appear blotchy. If they had swimsuit on it will appear darker under suit . The part of body exposed got lighter . The bangs are as soft as back of hair . Ususally they have brown eyeliner but ones with blue can be found . They have a heavy body . One big mistake on Barbie collecting is people look at rear of doll wear it says a date but Mattel keep the same date on dolls for many many yrs . So Date does not actually mean she is as old as Pat date number says . The later number 4 Ponytail Barbie and 5 have stiffer bangs and they did not change color to vinyl over the yrs . Some tended to get what is called oiley skin a greasy look . You can wipe it but be careful not to touch paint on face . Just use a dry cloth or q-tip .
I'm not really into Barbie collecting, My dolls are always quite a bit bigger, so I only have a few newer ones that I've purchased for sentimental reasons...off the top of my head, there's the two Little Debbies, one of the many Coca-Cola Barbies and a Lucille Ball Barbie.
Of course, if I ever come across a vintage Barbie, she will come home with me...but that isn't likely. Not in Spain, where Barbie arrived in the 80s...

Esther Are you in Spain ? I remember in US when she first came out and looked at the store shelf where they all were piled in boxes and below that self was all her beautiful clothes . Myself and my girlfriend looked at Barbie and had never seen any doll look so strange but we loved the clothes . We were picking out the doll you wanted for Christmas . We both passed on the Number 1 Barbie and picked a Little Miss Revlon . Boy do I wish now we had bought the whole shelf of number 1 Barbie's I could retire to a warm place with no winters :-)
Yes, I've been living in Spain for the past 20 years now, and also spent my teens here. That's why most of my dolls and many of my collectibles are spanish.
She's fabulous -- I wish I still had my original Barbie -- she had an all-plastic head and came with three different colored wigs --- loved her! :)

LOL kerry . Hopefully you will one find like her . The number 1,2 and 3 barbie command the highest price but you have to know difference and oh not to mention that you check the body out :-)
Oh and kerry I will never look at Mickey mouse the same anymore ! :-) You taught me more than I knew about Mickey and all his watches ! Love them
