Spatter glass has been made by everyone everywhere, but particularly during the Deco period. It basically comes in two finishes: glossy and satin. I am interested specifically in pieces that can be attributed to the Czech glass industry. We do know Kralik produced very high quality glossy spatter. Ruckl is known for its satin "Flame" line (Truitt 2, 75. Decor 123). However, those pictured above remain unidentified. Markings are no help, for they indicate provenance and were most probably added by exporters/importers. The vase in pic. 1 (11", and not strictly "spatter")) has a round mark, while the first in pic 2 has a straight line mark (all, plus the one in pic. 3, are 8", which seems to be a favored size). All are cut from the top--no pontil mark. Ruckl might be a possible manufacturer; unfortunately, at this point is must be just an educated guess, since there is hardly any hard documentation of its output. Those shown in Truitt 2 do not indicate whether they are satin or not, and most show characteristic pulled lines. Another tantalizing fact-some of the shapes appear in the 1929 and 1930 Butler Brothers catalogs. Welz might be another possibility, but the same lack of documentation applies, perhaps due to a general lack of research interest on Czech mass-produced glass for export during the period immediately before WWII. Yet, one indisputable fact remains: it made it to England and America in such quantities that it still can be frequently found in flea markets, shows and the Internet.
Feel welcome to add any further information you might have, as well as comments or pictures of any glossy or satin spatter pieces in your collections.
