I have a D1 which started production in November 1999 with a whopping 2.7 MP. Nikon 's D1 was the first practical DSLR for a lowered price of $5,600.00 in 99. I use the D1, it takes excellent pics, and is very user friendly.
Wow!! Was that D1 Nikon's first camera. I do remember that the chip used by Nikon made by Kodak was terrible the blue channel was nasty. And Nikon and Cannon used this chip for there early years. So I went to Fuji pro cameras and never left. There chip was theirs, and a beautiful one, but they used the cheap Nikon body's. It took years before Nikon and Cannon made better chips. I remember Kodak salesmen telling me about their chip, bragging about it. That's one of Kodak's early problems, stuck in 1990s, Nikon and Cannon finally took over all pro Cameras and chips. Fuji last year stopped making DSLR's. Sony made chips for years don't know about them though.
The D1 was Nikon 1st own DSLR I don't know what you are refering to as the chip. The card is a compactflash style and to todays standards very large and bulky but still fits in a card reader.Yes the D1 is in my opinion a great joy with great response time and super user friendly features not to mention the weight is very well balanced.
