This is a school desk that I bought for my home. Im not intrested in what its worth, I want to know if anyone knows about the (lock?) that I found as I was taking it apart to strip it back to its original color. The lock is in the third pic and you can see where it was inserted into the edge of the top. You can see the key hole in the 2nd pic. The key would go through the wood hole and turn the lever and the lever would slide into the small hole that is next to the inkwell. We are thinking that it was to lock in the inkwell. Not sure. So if anyone nows anything about this, and also what the inkwell itself looked like. Please let me know.

I've refinished a couple, but don't recall a lock in that area.

I just rechecked the one I still have and no lock or cut out. Maybe this was an upgraded version meant to prevent delinquents from causing problems?

Interesting about the lock, I have never heard of one with a lock either. Good luck with your restoration!

I have no idea but I also have a few old school desks. But, no locks. I do have one desk (not yet pictured online) that has an inkwell made out of old thick glass with a spring-driven top that keeps it closed.
