I found this Singer sewing machine buried in the ground. Researched the serial number placing it manufactured in 1906. Does anyone have a clear picture of the same one. It has a design with a lions body, human head and wings. I'm afraid to clean it too much, but wondering what the design clearly looks like and if you have any other information on it?? Thank you!
The decoration on your Singer machine is called " Sphinx " . You should be able to find a clear picture of one on the internet or perhaps on e-bay .

That is a Singer 27, in sadly poor condition, with the Sphinx design as Nancy says. A reasonably common model, if you search you should be able to find one in nice condition. I wouldn't spend too much time or money on that one, it's very far gone, unless it has specific sentimental value.
Thanks Bernadette. We actually found it buried in the ground. No sentimental value to us. My young kids think it's cool how old it is and my daughter wants to take it to school!
KJS : If you can give us the serial number I could tell you how old your machine is . The serial number is on the bed of the machine right under the rusted bobbin winder . It is on a long oval raised area of the bed in front . You may need to rub it with a bit of steal wool in order to read the number . It should have at least one or two letters before the number starts . That is part of the serial number .
It is entirely possible that the serial number could be just numbers with no letters. The rectangular bases appear in the late 1890's. My 27 of this shape dates to 1899 and the serial number is 16435231. Note that Singer did not use I, O, or Q at the start of serial numbers, and that the A, B, C etc are not in chronological order - the earliest single letter serial numbers start with M, N and P. The C and G can appear very similar.
Thanks Ladies. We did look it up on the singer website a week ago. It is from 1906. Early "H" series H369484. My daughter cannot wait to share this at school.
