In the world of badge collecting (police, fire etc.) a very interesting specialty is that of advertising badges issued by the highly competitive makers of these badges. Here is an example issued by one of the best in the business, the V. H. Blackinton Company of Attleboro Falls, Mass. This example shows off their “HI-GLO” finish and high quality enameling work The next two scans are the obverse and reverse of one of Blackinton’s convention floor hand outs marked “N.I.G.P. 1948” on the obverse and inscribed “COMPLIMENTS OF V. H. BLACKINTON & CO. ATTLEBORO FALLS MASS. BADGE MAKERS SINCE 1852” on the reverse. With our current economic problems and our government’s reportedly extravagant spending habits this badge is especially relevant today since the initials N.I.G.P. stand for National Institute of Governmental Purchasing which was established in 1944, also a time of huge governmental war time spending.
