THESE WON SECOND PLACE IN ANTIQUE SHOW LORAIN COUNTY FAIR IN 1992.
INTERESTING THINGS ATTACHED TO THEM
IT APPEARS THAT AT ONE TIME THERE WAS GOLD PLATING ON THEM
TRACES OF GOLD FLAKES ON THEM
ARE THEY ART DECO OR ART NOUVEAU?
THE ATTACHMENTS SEEM TO BE PLASTIC IN NATURE AND HAVE A RUBBERY FEEL TO THEM.

Unsolved Mystery

I am not at all surprised that these glasses took the attention of the judges at the County Fair back in '92.

To have one of these "calici" would make me happy.
But a set of four is quite amazing!

The Italian word 'calice' loosely translates as chalice or goblet. These are hand blown or 'soffiati'. The gold flakes may well be within the glass: a process called 'vetro avventurina'. The foot and the rim of the glass have a trailed decoration. Is the colour a purple, a green or a blue? Perhaps it s a black. If it is black it might well be there to highlight the applied decoration on blown baluster stem called 'lo stelo a balaustro'.

The decor of the stem's decoration gives it all away: these are four memories of Venezia. The decoration remind me of the decoration on the prow of a gondola. The black of the applied decoration evokes the colour of the gondola as well.

The gondola has a weighted decoration at its front. They call it "il ferro" a weighted counter balance that has a top part called 'il delfino' or the dolphin. Below it on a gondola are six combs that represent the six quarters of Venice.
Together it makes up "il ferro di prua ( or prora)". On your glasses the suburbs of Venice or the 'sei Sestieri' are split into two groups of three.

They will have been made by one of the big glass houses in Murano. I'm sure someone will tell you which one of the firms.

Perhaps they have a deco look about them but frankly the designs of these masters is timeless. I envy you them. Thank you for sharing them.

By the way in Italy they call "art nouveau" - lo stile Liberty.

    Dear Vertaio50
    Thank you for the infrmation
It definitely settled the curiosity that I had as to "who" and "why" someone would do such a thing.
I do hope others will come forth wih additional info.
My wife was thrilled to hear that which you informed us .
She purchased them approximately 25 years ago at a yard sale for $ 3
    Again
    Thank you Bill

Sent a request for more information to "ART OF VENICE MURANO GLASS GALLERY"
One of there staff replied with the following:
He thinks that they were custom made.
Perhaps Vertraio 50 was correct in his assumption that they were made in memory of Venezia.
They were made with classic Murano technique
Inside of cup and base bottom both have a pontil which means they were fully handmade
He observed that the "rim was very well done and classy"

I'd agree with all that he/she said. They might have been a special order, but that is hard to prove as such until someone suggests a maker. Then you might be able to contact the firm, many of whom still function today.
Why not contact the Glass message board and ask for their help in the Murano Glass section?
