I love these photos of proud working men and horses ! We may have to relearn some of these skills someday with the price of oil and gas lol !!
Yes we better go back to old days when we could be self sufficent . I miss those days Mcgarrett .
I love the photos, but I also wanted to point out that the horses are pulling what is called a dump rake. The tines are in the up position in the top picture, it could be raised with a hand lever and be locked for transport, or tripped with a foot lever when working in the field to dump the hay.
Thank you walksoftly for correcting me . I just knew at that age when you hooked up the big horses they were for the plows . Later I remember bigger machines and yes I did bail hay . Glad you liked photo . Farms are part of our ancestry and important to remember how they survived when they came to this new country USA . Proud to have been a farmer
Thank you again :-)
I'm proud to have been a farmer as well, Canada wouldn't be what it is today without the hard work of our ancestors. I didn't work with horses, but I have sat on a dump rake pulled by a tractor.
Hi Walksoftly . I have family in Canada that farmed but they raised exotic animals , brama bulls, llamas, birds and ect. My Uncle was a clown in rodeo . The first homestead was started in about 1890 by my grandmothers sister near Alberta :-) I have a Uncle with his trained horse that did tricks on command
My great grandfather turned sod on his homestead in 1882 in Manitoba, your family sound like an interesting bunch.
Walksoftly -The Canada bunch of our family were very interesting and farmed much different than we did :-) But they are still there and have some llama's yet . Is Manitoba near Alberta ? Please excuse my question I quess I could look at a map but you would know canada better than I . Your family has a long history there too and life was not easy was it ?
The province of Saskatchewan sits between MB & AB, we live in western MB and it takes apx. 9 hrs driving time to get to AB. Our ancestors worked much harder then we did & sacrificed allot.
Yes they did Walksoftly so it is important that the kids today know what are ancestors did to survive. Glad to meet a Friendly Canadian friend :-)
Thank you wolcott and scandi !
Thank you toolate !
Thank you tlmbaran!
