Beautiful-- such great detail and work put into the back of the carving! Is this a cemetery work?

This angel statue is located in the River Bend Cemetery in Westerly, Rhode Island. The plot is down the row from my father's family plot. Our stone is not so elaborate, but there are many wonderful stone carvings all around us. And the cemetery overlooks a river that goes into the ocean. Rhode Island is the home of several respected granite quarries and the stone business used to be big business in this state. Not so much any more though. My family's ancestors came to America from Scotland to work in the quarries, and they went on to become carvers. There is a museum in this town that has old record books of the custom stone orders that were produced and who worked on which parts. We have found many entries that include the names of my father's relatives. I'm really proud to know that I come from a line of people who helped to create such perfect work. Finished stones were shipped by train to many other cemeteries within New England and other states. Thanks for loving my photo.

It is amazing what some folks can do in stone (clay, oils, etc...)

Unfortunately, it is the beauty, value and limited to no security that has turned much early cemetery items into targets by unscrupulous "pickers". Many states have tried to combat the theft and sale by outlawing ANY selling of cemetery/ grave related items.

      Thanks again for sharing.

      Scott
