The 87th Division was made up of National Guard troops from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
It was activated at Camp Pike, AR and didn't make it overseas until near the end of the war. It never fought as a Division.
The insignia on this WW1 helmet was applied by scraping away the pebble finish in a circle leaving the inner pebble finish acorn and then painting the scraped area blackish green to highlite.
The insignia dates from WW1 era.
The helmet is complete with chin strap (broken) and liner.
I have many WW1 Division helmets-- most with a traditional painted insignia.

Thanks Stepback and Kerry.
I have a 3rd div, 5th div, 28th div, 33rd div, 77th div and 89th Division painted helmets helmets from WWI. I also have one with a white "B" inside of a red box .....unknown division, came with an 80th division uniform grouping. Possibly "B" company??
It sounds like you have a good collection of WW1 helmets-- post some when you get a chance. I'd like to see the "B" one and someone here may be able to ID.
