This is one display cabinet in my home office with a selection wood and brass cameras. They range in dates from the mid 1870s to about 1910. Even after years of collecting, I'm continually amazed by the diversity and creativity of early designs.

All cameras shown here are in 100% original condition (no restoration). As a rule, early cameras should not be exposed to direct sunlight, etc. With few exceptions, polishing brass and refinishing wood will significantly decrease the collector value.

Finally, all of these cameras are capable of shooting pictures if I took the time to create glass plates. But I simply enjoy them as they are!

My updated camera display can be seen here:

Hi 'renerakers' ... as an FYI, the second camera on the top shelf is a No.2 Stereo Brownie.
    3. Lance B., 13 years ago
I have the same camera that is displayed on your main picture top row middle camera. I would like to know the value of this camera. The back side of the panel that comes off to put the film has "Patented in Feb. 25, 1890 and Nov. 3, 1895. I'm curious to know the actual date it was made and the approximate value. Your assistance would be appreciated. Thank you. Lance B.

Hi Lance; The middle camera on the top row is a No.2 Stereo Brownie Model A. It was introduced in 1905 and discontinued in 1910; approximately 4,000 were made. Early models had a Brownie Automatic Shutter which was replaced with a Pocket Automatic Shutter from 1906 on. As far as value, it is dependent on condition and completeness; however as reference, a very fine example just sold on eBay (Item 290478516314) for $478. As a note, the rear panel is hinged with the body material and should not completely come off. What does the inside of your panel have for a name and model?

This is by far one of the most impressive collections I have ever seen and beautifully arranged.

Thanks for the compliment, Henry (and all). Several new acquisitions happening and more posts to come; stay tuned.

Hi codydogg ... thanks for the compliment. I've been collecting over 25 years and what you see is the result of continual refinement of my collecting vision as well as very finicky acquisitions - only the best examples are considered (when possible). I don't believe in doing restoration, but 'preservation' is done (i.e. stabilization of fragile leather and so forth) as needed. The cameras come from a variety of sources including eBay, public auctions, fellow collectors, and leads from my website. More to be posted (at some point). - Rob

Hi Filmnet ... I thought I replied to your note about Deardorff and it didn't show up. I tried a second time and it didn't show up. This is the third time ... maybe the charm? Anyhow, Deardorff cameras are not included in my collection because they are too 'new' (so to speak). If you want to learn more about Deardorff, you probably want to get to know Ken Hough; he's the world's foremost authority on Deardorff. Google Ken to find his website.
