Set of 32 chessmen, turned, carved and assembled from the nut of the Tagua palm, generally called vegetable ivory. Tagua trees are found mostly in northern South America, Ecuador, for example, the origin of this set. The pieces are assembled using 2 to 5 segments, pawns from a single segment. Curiously, the black queen is sporting a beard, so this segment was probably intended for a king. Kings are 4 3/8”, pawns 1 ¼”. White side is natural, dark side is stained rather than painted.
