Arrow River, Manitoba 1906
Crane placing girder on railway overpass, this photo was taken during the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad (later to become the main line of the Canadian National Railway), it's tracks crossed the Canadian Pacific Miniota Subdivision track.
My Grandfather worked on the construction of the GTPR.

Thanks for the love, scandi, I live apx. 5 miles from this site & we used to farm the land next to it, my maternal grandpa worked for the family that owned that same farm when he came to Canada in 1905.
We were blessed to grow up with our paternal Grandparents living across the road & our Maternal Grandparents only a mile in the other direction. Things have changed considerably since that photo was taken , the farms have gotten bigger & the Canadian Pacific rail line that the crane is sitting on was abandoned in the early 80's & with it the grain elevators that where the lifeblood of at least 8 small communities.

That is a great picture, full of power and promise. It must have been wonderful having your family so close. It was sad to read your note re: the demise of the rail line, and the closing of the elevators. what was the outcome? Did they move one big elevator replacing the eight, or did was the grain afterwards shipped right out of the area?

Having both sets of Grandparents living close by was & is the best thing a child can have, many wonderful memories.
When the small elevators closed with the demise of the CP branch line, large elevators & inland terminals were built on the CN & CP main lines. Now our roads get pounded all to hell from the big trucks hauling grain everywhere.
This happened all over western Canada, what was once a prairie icon is now only memories, sad.
Yes, it is sad how the familiar things in our lives are cast aside in the name of "progress"!
