This stein was purchased in 1958 by a Warrent Officer who was a member of the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division.
The stein has a nice lid with a figural soldier holding a rifle. The lithopane is the "naked woman" a popular soldier motif.
The 28th Infantry won fame during WW1 as part of the 1st Infantry Division. It served in WW2 as part of the 8th Division.
During Viet Nam the 28th was again part of the 1st Division, where it serves today (including GWOT service).

Looks to have the Lion and Shield of Bavaria as a the thumb lever. I wonder if that alludes to where in Germany the soldier/unit was stationed.
The original owner was in Baumholder-- so maybe it was just a popular motif used on many steins?
