Here is part of a homemade skate-o kit. Missing is a 2by4 board and bottle caps. Here we have a coke and 7up bottle wooden carton. We would nail the cut 2by4 onto the carton and open one skate and attach the front part of the skate to the front of the board. The back part of the skate would be nailed to the end of the board. You would do the same with the other skate and carton. You would nail bottle caps just for looks. We called them skate-o's and would use it like a scooter. If anyone has another name for it or even remembers or made these. I am curious how wide spread they were. I also included a pic of one I googled. Anyone with a better pic. Thank you.
Thanks to gotwire for location of the center pics.

Here's a good pic of a (what we call "skate crates" or "crate scooters") http://www.snapfish.com/Life/fe/p/ext/life/LifeCom?q=image_source~LIFECOM%5Eimage_id~50693823

gotwire, thanks for the links. Not many pics of skate-o's or skate crates. Thanks again. Mike
These always make me think of Back to the Future when Marty travels in time to the 50's, steals one of these from a kid, rips the crate off, and cruises it like a standard skateboard.
