There's more to that crown than meets the eye!
These days there are Brazilians, but in the thirties there was Visirova, Tania.
She was born in 1908 in Besarabia moved on to the Caucasus during the Russian revolution and finally landed in Paris in 1927. She was the beauty of her time and danced nude in the corps de ballet of the Folies Bergere. She modelled for Matisse Poliakoff, Renoir and others; she was known for her charm and sensuality and the crowds chanted "la Visarova». She also caught the eye of the King of Albania, King Zog.
In 1929 it is said she married him disappeared for four years to the harem (one of four wives) in Tirana. Bored, she returned to Paris and was welcomed back to the Folies by Paul Derval as its "Queen". She reigned on the stage of the Folies until the final curtain before the War.
She even made it into Life magazine with some risque pictures in 1937, 22 Nov edition.
She wrote about it all in a book: Tania Visirova: Du Caucase aux Folies-Bergere.
In 1942 she began teaching dance to the poor children of Nice and did so until 1960. She then donned the veil again, but this time as a nun, and entered a monastery in the south of France in Roquesteron.
She did it all!
